Hey, so I have my MA from the U of Chicago, and now I'm looking for a phd program somewhere where there is a very open-minded prof. who is willing to take on a topic that really hasn't been done.
Topical links that might connect my study with theirs include material culture and time & space.
I'd also like to be in a nice environment. Anyone know of any such professors in say, the pacific northwest? (this is the main reason I'm not applying to the U of Chicago for this)
I'd especially like a well-known / good program if possible.

PS CIIS has their own Tribe.

Wed, April 27, 2005 - 1:43 AMI guess you wouldn't prefer Houston at all, but Rice Anthro is a very good program. I feel like I am intellectually reborn after going to Rice. It is a small but cordial program with not much rivalry and some very good professors. James Faubion is my advisor who is open to any substantial suggestions. Hannah Landecker and Chris Kelty are new, very clever science and technology people but they are open to other themes, too... George Marcus has left the department but still connected to the department. He is accessible...
By the way, Houston is quite a cosmopolitan city to live...
Rice Anthro offers 4 years of fellowship... -

Tue, June 21, 2005 - 3:47 PMI've heard good things about U Brit Columbia, any one else? I considered it for a moment but my faculty of interest are at U Florida. Nice big program (36 full time faculty and 14 affiliates), lots of range, lots of funding. Lots of cutting edge research. Open minded. You should check it out.

Wed, July 6, 2005 - 11:15 PMI know the ranking for U of Chicago makes it #1? And then Harvard then Michigan? The only one that is in an acceptable climate to me is Harvard! teehee! I think I will apply for the heck of it! I also am looking into Trent and McGill in Montreal, Berkeley, Stanford and possibly Cambridge.
I find myself torn between the desire to work with some amazing professors and the name of the school, seeing as how this is a big deal once you get your PhD. I took a class with Sherry Ortner last quarter and she gave me the advice that you shouldn't worry about which professor you want to work with, that the best school is your best choice (I suppose I should apply to the Midwest schools, argh!).
Any other opinions on this or advice is welcome.
