burning man ethnography references

topic posted Sun, April 9, 2006 - 9:33 AM by  automatthew
hello all

im planning on doing a traditional ethnographic survey at burning man this year in the hope of creating some good data to work with in the future.

i dont have much of a goal in mind other than data collection though i am particularly interested in the role that burning man plays in identity construction and the way that relates to community. and also the waysthat sexual experimentation at burning man interact with sexual identity.

anyways, just looking for some suggestions about works that might inform such a study. ive already read afterburn and am about to tackle temporary autonomous zones but any suggestions are appreciated!

i found quite a good article, the author is called Kozinets. The title something like: "Can we really escape the market: emancipatory illusions at burningman", something like that. I think it was more economic based but I found it well written. If anyone can add further info, I´m also doing a project on festivals and would be really interested if anyone knows about any more references I haven´t managed to find.

    thanks

to crosspost from the anthropology tribe:

i met a man in goa this year who said his son was in the ph.d program at stanford and was writing about burning man. you might try poking around on the stanford website to find him.

also, a friend of mine from uchicago, tony d'andrea, wrote his thesis about nomadic counterculture in ibiza and goa, and it will soon be forthcoming from routledge. his website is: home.uchicago.edu/~afdandre/ . you'll probably find some of his work to be relevant.

Are you planning to do a follow-up study this year??

I have a related request - I'm doing an "Information Behavior" study (librarian speak for ethnography...) on research methods and I'm focusing on people who go to/plan to go to burning man.

I want to know primarily about people's experiences getting prepared for their first and second times, but also how more experienced burners find new ideas to improve/enhance/change their time there.

So, where do you find your information? and how much time and effort do you tend to put into it? Do you talk to people? read websites? read books? articles? do nothing and hope for the best? a combination of these?

And, how do you find out about what you have to learn? For instance, did someone tell you that you need a dust mask and then you researched the best dust masks? Or did you not hear about this and have to make something on the fly when a dust storm struck?

Hey, I'd be totally interested in assisting you!! This wil be my first burn. I haven't yet begun to prepare, but if you contact me by mid-summer I should be able to provide some data on my preparations.
As well, I'm a BA in cultural anthro with a constantly monitoring "anthro radar", so I should be able to give you some suitable ethnographic observations from before, during, and after the burn.

        Love and Light,
        Nagdeo

Unfortunately this is just a paper for this quarter. Thanks for the offer though. Any input about where/who you hope to find information to help you prepare will be useful though.

(I've got 4 years of IRB -approved fieldwork at BM (from my MA thesis) to apply towards the basic "user group profile" (aka ethnography for librarians).)
