The Virtual Campfire: An Ethnography of Online Social Networking

Hello All!

For anyone interested in cyberanthropology, online social networking, and new ways of doing social research in this new phase of media, I welcome you to peruse my "webnography" @ www.thevirtualcampfire.org. The elevator pitch:

Based on five years of participant-observation on the social networking sites MySpace, Facebook, and Tribe.net, The Virtual Campfire explores the increasingly blurred boundaries between human and machine, public and private, voyeurism and exhibitionism, the history of media and our digitized future. Woven throughout are the stories and experiences of those who engage with these sites regularly and ritualistically, the generation of "digital natives" whose tales attest to the often strange and uncomfortable ways online social networking sites have come to be embedded in the everyday lives of American youth.

I am especially interested in what you think of my portrayal of Tribe, and am open to all critiques and suggestions. Drop me a line at tunabananas@gmail.com!

Be well,
Jenny

Hello. My name is Misty. I am currently enrolled in college. I have worked in the child care field for quite a few years now and am so done it. What I really want to study now is Anthropology & Archeology. I haven't taken classes on it or anything yet but I have always been facinated with ancient history, artifacts and more. I would love to chat with others who either have a degree in Anthro., studying it now or could give me some advice about it. I will be starting my actual classes for it in the next few months but right not just taking math, english classes. Thank you!
PS I would also like to find out some good books to read that you recommend!

The Namal Tribe's Humming Bird "Activation" Rite?

Hey guys, a while back I was watching "Tribal Life" on The Travel Channel. Anyway, they were documenting the Namal Tribe (not sure just exactly where they are situated, 'cause my computer's really sluggish at the moment and making it hard for me to even perform a google search!) who perform a ritual with the men whereby they gather to carve effigies of humming birds and "activate" them by dying them or decorating them with a red pigment culled from a local fruit; afterwards this image is regarded as being, for all intents and purposes, alive!

I would like to find out any scholastic/ethnographic info. about this tribe's practice that I can locate, if anyone could aid me, due to an article I am presently working on (well, I'm still in the researching/out-lining phase) about cult-images. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find anmy reliable data about this on-line!

Thanks!

Take Care,
Wade

I don't know why it wasn't insisted upon from the very beginning. It just makes good sense. But that's me looking back from the place I am now. Not then looking forward.

hey everyone

thanks for reading this post
i am currently a junior in college studying cultural anthropology, however, i really want to drop out of college ( i never liked school) but my parents are really pressuring me to stay in school and finish my BA. I love anthropology, but i have no idea what i am going to do with a BA in it. What types of jobs can i get? My parents said that I would have to work shitty jobs for the rest of my life if i didn't finish college, which I don't agree with, but i have no idea what type of good paying job i could get with a BA in anthro. First of all, i HATE writing and once i have finished my BA, i DO NOT want to continue on with any sort of formal education. Any ideas? suggestions? thank you so much. i feel lost and school starts in 2 days and i have no motivation. whatsoever.

Ethnic Minority Representation in Yunnan

Greetings from Yunnan province, China, where I am currently investigating the representation of ethnic minorities under cultural tourism, watching the commodification of culture spread itself in colorful new patterns beneath the nose of what one of my professors often refers to as "critical intellect". I have visited the Minority Nationalities Villages in Kunming, as well as the ethnic minorities theme park in Beijing weeks ago, and am now attempting to interview Dali's female tour guides, who wear the new costume of the commodified Bai peoples (which is much different than traditional costume, as far as I have seen). Overall, the theme parks present the minzu (minority groups) in a feminized (most park workers are women), youth-oriented (all are in their twenties or so), participation-focused scenario (ring this bell for good luck, touch this cement gourd for fertility, stroke this water buffalo skull for money, pay 60 yuan to be dressed up and photographed as a Tibetan, Yi, or Miao). Prominent features of the park include demonstrations of circle dancing and drumming, housing recreations, and culinary exhibitions (Tibetans drink butter tea, Bai drink three kinds of symbolic tea, Yi drink huge jugs of wine), all watered down from the experience that would be spontaneous culture, and often refocused on the more "superstitious" elements of the group. I guess that my point is that ethnicity and culture are created in part for the purpose of enacting common identity, recognizing difference and community from the inside out, rather than against the backdrop of saleable features...

Can you think of another function that cultural representation from the inside fulfills, versus the recreation and performance of culture for the purpose of employment and tourist draw? I am attempting to build my multiple perspectives on this phenomena... Any other thoughts on cultural representation would be so helpful and I would love to hear from others who may have analyzed this two-way mirror. Thanks, Katie Rose (Humboldt State University, CA, Anthropology/Religious Studies Depts.)

Perception of space in urban context

Hi,

anyone familiar with any theories on how the perception of space in urban context changes according to cultural status?
I'm intereseted in how this perception changes according to the position of an individual within the cultural stratification of society. Traditional/structured people percieve space and city differently than modern or even postmodern ones. And they ascribe significance to parts of a city differently too.
Although there is plenty of literature on this issue in modernity and postmodernity, traditional urbanites did not get their share. It's a pity as they form the biggest chunk of the urban users in the developing world. I'm doing a dissertation on the subject, and need to substantiate my theoretical base before conducting interviews/fieldwork.
Any ideas anyone?

Best,
Janset

Hi everyone,
I am currently doing research for the 'meaning of time' in west african culture; specifically Ghanian culture, any book or artical references on the subject would be hugely appreciated.

I am sieving through some titles now but the list generally for the significance of time in other cultures is humongous, especially since they are usually paragraphs to pages worth in ethnographies, but none too specific. Therefore any help or advice from your experiences would be well and truly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Hello,

We've got a tribe on traditional and ethnic foods, and the subject somewhat overlaps with anthropology: the tribe is for discussing 'ethnic food' in general, and also for discussing food traditions- what people eat on traditional holidays and other special occasions, food in religious ritual, and anything else related to what the grandma's did besides cook the stuff.

whats the best way to incorpoprate interviews into a dissertation? I'm currently injecting commentary and theory into a transcript of an interview but it all seems a bit long winded.... would it be better just to contextualise my empirical research in a discussion of the topic? its an investigation into squatting and how notions of home and identity are constructed in a world of movement and dispalacement...cheers

hello all

im planning on doing a traditional ethnographic survey at burning man this year in the hope of creating some good data to work with in the future.

i dont have much of a goal in mind other than data collection though i am particularly interested in the role that burning man plays in identity construction and the way that relates to community. and also the waysthat sexual experimentation at burning man interact with sexual identity.

anyways, just looking for some suggestions about works that might inform such a study. ive already read afterburn and am about to tackle temporary autonomous zones but any suggestions are appreciated!

Sad news

Just got this email message a couple of days ago....very sad

To the Institute Community,

I am very sorry to have to tell you of the sad news of the passing early
this morning of Professor Emeritus Clifford Geertz.

Cliff was founding professor of the School of Social Science, who joined
the Faculty in September 1970. He was the Harold F. Linder Professor
from 1982 until 2000, when he obtained emeritus status. His work
spanned the fields of cultural anthropology, religion and social theory,
and his most recent research concerned the question of ethnic diversity
and its implications in the modern world. Among his many honors, in
2002 he received the Award of Meritorious Achievements from the
Indonesian government and in 1992 was awarded the Fukuoka Asian Cultural
Prize.

Prior to joining the Institute, Cliff was Professor of Social
Anthropology and Chairman of the Committee for the Comparative Study of
New Nations at the University of Chicago. He was a visiting lecturer at
Princeton University from 1975-2000, Eastman Professor at Oxford
University from 1978-1979, and in 1984 a Fellow of the International
Interchange Program of the Japan Society.

Cliff will be greatly missed, and we extend our deep sympathy to his
wife, Dr. Karen Blu, and to his children, Erika and Benjamin. The
family will be at home on Saturday, November 4 from 5:00 pm - 8:00 pm at
5 Newlin Road. A memorial service will be held at the Institute, and an
announcement of that will follow.

hey.

did you guys know that the k in ursula k leguin stands for kroeber?

have any of you read the word for world is forest?

just wanted to gush about how much i love her and how nice it was to find out that one of the main reasons she's so fabulous is because she was raised by an anthropologist.

i find science fiction in general to be anthropological, or should i say xenopological? especially in the construction of alien societies.

any other anthropology/scifi fanatics out there?

what do you guys think?

a genuinely new social formation or just the same old same old?

does it make sense to talk about it as a religion? it seems to fulfill many of the same functions as a religion.

what about international networks? the formation of community?

what about identity?

what about the material of modern life? bringing all that material out onto a blank slate and reorganizing it. amalgamating it. destroying it. contesting meanings and categories.

what is up with this business?

do you think real fieldwork could be done in this context?

A beginners' tribe to review, to connect, to discuss anything related to cyber cultural emergences... http://tribes.tribe.net/cyberculture ....

There are several tribes on internet, blogging etc but I hope this will have a more anthropological touch. Anyway, we will see what can emerge...

I recently wrote a small paper on how I thought the Japanese fashion movement that started in the Harajuku district displays the westernization of their culture (from collectivist to individualist) and was wondering if anyone had thoughts on this or knew of any articles or readings I should look at. Although I am done with the paper I am still fascinated. . .

Anthropology applied to Tribe? Or similar communities?

Has anyone read anything on the subject of web communities like Tribe? It seems there is some interesting application, and some relatively 'solid' rules and endless documented conversation thread to glean from.

One thing that strikes me (as a relatively new tribe user) is deliberate push of status in the highly visible number of 'friends' any user has. Unlike many communities, status it is easily measurable (almost the equivalent of concrete money-measurements of status, like salary). It also creates 'big men' and 'big women' within the community, who conveniently hub large spokes of less connected people, redistributing connections instead of wealth.

I'm sure all this has been done before, probably about the time Friendster made it big with the east coast Universities. It's just new to me.

Any thoughts on the subject? Any other writings you've seen? I'm sure there's a web company more than happy to market a site based on someone's thesis on the subject.

Gail Kelly

(copied from the Oregonian, Sept. 17.)

Gail Margaret Kelly
KELLY, GAIL MARGARET Professor Gail Kelly's friends, students, and admirers will hold an evening of remembrance at 6 p.m in the Heathman Hotel on Oct. 7, 2005. Dr. Kelly was a fascinating woman -brilliant, intimidating, and beautiful. To her friends, she was reminiscent of Myrna Loy as the Judge in "Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer." To her students she was John Houseman in the "Paper Chase." An intensely private person, she handled her different roles efficiently -frightening the wits out of her upper division students in the morning at Reed and advising Saks Fifth Avenue on their Portland store in the afternoon. She was born in Deer Park, Wash., and attended Reed College and the University of Chicago. After receiving her doctorate from Chicago and completing 18 months of field work in Ghana, she returned to Reed where she taught for the next 40 years. She advised over 60 thesis students and was responsible for close to 100 undergraduate theses written at Reed. She loved the theory of anthropology. As a disciple of Franz Boas, Max Weber, and Talcott Parsons, she disdained applied anthropology. Her classes were challenging and stringent. In this informal era, she insisted that students phone in a request to miss a class. Her opinion of physical anthropologists would need to be censored before it could be repeated. Most of us remember her sense of humor. One student wrote: "In discussing totemic animals, she said that since the Brown Beaver bus line passed by Reed, we would all be 'people of the beaver' and as such we would not eat any beaver." She expounded, "One would not expect Bo (a bright, female anthropology major in the class) to be walking around with a bit of beaver hanging out of her mouth." When she left her Houseman role behind at the end of the day, she was a vivacious and glamorous friend. Her frequent visits to Portland gatherings were marked by martinis and Noel Coward double entendres. She was not above organizing her friends' lives-selecting their homes, advising them on their dress, and recommending social engagements. She loved excellent food, clever repartee, fur coats, and good books. Disdaining cars, she was a master of the Portland bus system. Gail's friends and students extend an apology for Gail's far too brief obituary. The terribly short notice reported her birth and death, but omitted much of what lay between. For most of us, only the "in between" really counts.

I've never taken any anthropology classes but I have taken a lot of art history classes. I'd like to find a good Visual Anthropology program. Where should I go? Any suggestions?

This site is great - you indicate your preferences in a program and they rank grad schools according to statistics. They also have options for other courses of study (all phd programs). The link should take you to the anthro ranking page.

http://www.phds.org/rankings/getWeights.php?d=27

do check out the schools web pages though because the program lumps all types of anthropology programs together - so you may get a high ranking for a school that doesn't offer the branch of anthro you want.

Hey, so I have my MA from the U of Chicago, and now I'm looking for a phd program somewhere where there is a very open-minded prof. who is willing to take on a topic that really hasn't been done.

Topical links that might connect my study with theirs include material culture and time & space.

I'd also like to be in a nice environment. Anyone know of any such professors in say, the pacific northwest? (this is the main reason I'm not applying to the U of Chicago for this)

I'd especially like a well-known / good program if possible.

Which schools of anth theory blow your mind, and why?

I find Edward Said's treatise on "Orientalism" to be quite useful, although there is a part of me that fears that if anthropologists weren't exoticising the other they'd be out of a job. I think it still presents some REALLY useful perspectives for the wanna-be Malinkowski.

Ethics 'n Anthro

I hear that the 80's was a period when anthro engaged in a lot of introspection- so I guess I'm proposing an 80's night of hand wringing. Hit it!

I'll offer a presumptive boundary on one end of this with some straight positivism. We do have the ability and justification to condemn certain aspects of tradition and change them if we are in a position to. Child soldiers, institutionalized rape, female circumcision, nationalism, environmentally unsustainable practices, etc etc are all bad. We can be fairly sure that with enough time, this will all become painfully obvious, but time is something of relatively grave importance right now, esp. with respect to environmental issues. I am pretty sure environmental issues will necessitate the deemphasis of strong humanist concerns at some point, and this is another big question to keep in mind.

I guess my remaining question is how to go about affecting change best. I think we can probably rule out violence, right...?

Hello,

I joined this community because for the last six years I have been out of college with a fixed idea of going back and recently, I realized that what I wanted to study was not rhetoric and composition at all, but sociocultural anthropology.

Color me excited and scared by turns!

My B.A. is in English with a concentration in Writing and a double cognate in Vocal Performance and Theatre. However, for the last four years, I have been researching and studying, primarily, topics in critical race theory and social construction of race, queer theory, transgendered issues and pop culture.

I am interested in a couple of different things...

I want to study the ways in which different cultures and communities of color think about each other and the messages we receive via popular culture about each other (e.g. the most recent debacle regarding Hot 97 in NY and the suppression of honest communicating)...

But there is also GBLTQI/SGL youth of color and their stories.

And a host of other things I am interested in that I think will be served through this discipline... but I am still unsure about whether it really... could be the axis around which most of my intellectual inquiries and study revolves.

I mean, I didn't study anthropology at USC. And I approach this as a writer... as an interpreter of theory and data...

I guess I am worried and looking to find out other people's stories and opinions about this.

In two years time, I plan to apply to the sociocultural anthropology program at UW.

Has anyone found a good 20 page or so paper on the recent events in the Ukraine that they might be reading in a graduate seminar at a university? I really enjoy the variety that chronical a history in terms of thier social implications for different social groups within the nation.
